Duplex stainless steel 1.4462 (also known as EN 10088-1 . This type of steel is particularly suitable for applications where both strength and resistance to corrosion are essential, especially in aggressive and demanding environments.
Key Features of Duplex 1.4462:
- Excellent Corrosion Resistance:
- High resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-rich environments (such as seawater or chemicals).
- Good resistance to intergranular corrosion, even after welding.
- Better resistance to stress corrosion cracking than austenitic stainless steel (such as 304 and 316).
- High Strength:
- Duplex 1.4462 has almost double the tensile strength compared to standard austenitic stainless steel, such as AISI 304 or 316.
- Good mechanical properties make it suitable for heavy mechanical applications where high strength is required.
- Density and Mechanical Properties:
- Density: ~7.8 g/cm³
- Tensile strength (Rm): 620-850 MPa
- Yield strength (Rp0.2): ≥ 450 MPa
- Elongation at break (A): ≥ 25%
- Modulus of elasticity: 200 GPa
- Hardness (HB): ~270 HB
- Chemical Composition:
- Chromium (Cr): 21-23%
- Nickel (Ni): 4.5-6.5%
- Molybdenum (Mo): 2.5-3.5%
- Nitrogen (N): 0.10-0.22%
- Carbon (C): max. 0.03%
- Weldability and Machinability:
- The material is easily weldable, but some preheating may be necessary to prevent tension.
- Although duplex stainless steel is machinable, it requires more attention and care than, for example, austenitic stainless steel due to its higher strength and hardness.
Applications:
- Offshore and maritime industry (seawater-resistant components, pumps, valves).
- Chemical and petrochemical industry (tanks, pipes, heat exchangers).
- Pulp and paper industry.
- Building and construction (structures exposed to heavy loads and corrosive environments).
- Mechanical drives such as spindles, nuts and linear drive systems where high strength and precision are required.
Duplex 1.4462 offers an excellent combination of strength, corrosion resistance and weldability, making the material ideal for a wide range of engineering and industrial applications.
